Dr. Ellen Weber, in her recent post, gave all of us with "blog-block" a list of great ideas to get the creative juices flowing. Number six on the list was recalling a dialogue between co-workers who collaborate well. It got me thinking about our group’s President, and my partner, Scott Wier.
I dialogue and collaborate with Scott on a daily basis. Scott has a brilliant head for business that’s powerfully coupled with a heart for his fellow group members and clients. Scott and I have known each other for 25 years and I’m blessed to be partnered with someone who is not only a valued associate but also a true friend. Here’s what I’ve learned about in my on-going dialogue with Scott:
- "I’m thinking about…What do you think?" Collaboration is a dialogue. I value Scott’s willingness to share his ideas and ask for opinions before implementation. He listens to opinions and clearly weighs them into his decision making.
- "Here’s what concerns me." When working out ideas, he never rejects your thoughts out-of-hand but offers his honest and frank concerns. Rather than shutting down the dialogue, this opens it up to response that continues the conversation: "I understand your concerns. Let me address them."
- "Go for it." Giving people empowerment and encouragement for their ideas and initiatives should be stated clearly. It provides tangible value and motivation.
- "What do you need from me?" Scott is a model of servant-leadership. This phrase isn’t just a question he asks when we’re talking about new initiatives. It’s a question he asks at the end of every conversation.
